Common Orthodontic Problems
- Crossbite: Upper teeth fit inside Lower teeth
- Underbite: Lower teeth protrude
- Excessive Overjet: the upper teeth protrude
- Deep Bite: the upper teeth cover the lower teeth too much
- Open Bite: the teeth do not come together vertically
- Midline Misalignment: The Midlines of upper and lower arches do not match
- Crowding
- Spacing
Treatment Timing and Phases
Phase I Treatment:
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends the first orthodontic appointment be no later than age 7. Usually early treatment can be done around age 7-9 when all of the permanent incisors and first molars are erupted. Estimated treatment time for Phase I is typically 10-16 months. Orthodontics may not be necessary for all patients at this age, but an evaluation can determine the most advantageous time to begin treatment.
Advantages of Phase I Treatment
- Moving protrusive teeth back to make them less susceptible to injury
- Improving the relationship between the upper and lower jaws for normal growth and development
- Improving facial appearance and self-esteem
- Taking advantage of good cooperation at this age
- Monitoring growth so that treatment can begin at the most optimal time
Supervision Phase: Time between Phase I and Phase II when growth and development is monitored
Phase II Treatment: Phase II treatment may be necessary even if Phase I treatment was done if problems still exist once all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Phase II treatment usually takes 16-30 months at 12-14 years of age.
Full Orthodontic Treatment for Teens and Adults: If phase I is not done or if the patient has all of their permanent teeth, full orthodontic treatment can be done. This includes braces on the top and bottom teeth. It may also include a functional appliance or surgery in conjunction with the braces to correct the bite.
Clear Aligners
For those patients that have minor crowding or spacing, Dr. Cunningham can evaluate for a series of clear aligners.
Retention Phase
Removable retainers should be worn full time for the first 6 months after braces are removed and at night as “pajamas for the teeth” as long as possible.
Common Appliances Used

- Cervical Pull Headgear
- Reverse Pull Headgear
- Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE)

Orthodontic Benefits for All Ages
No matter what age, orthodontics is a great benefit. Orthodontics not only creates a beautiful smile, but can improve overall health. Aligning teeth in their proper position will make it easier to brush and floss, which can help decrease the chance of tooth decay and/or gum disease. Aligning the teeth can also decrease the chance of irregular tooth wear and allow for proper chewing and speaking. In certain cases, aligning the teeth can also help alleviate the signs and symptoms of TMJ (jaw joint pain or discomfort).
